Building Automation > Domotics
Fabio Gaggi - Domotics

Domotics is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of technologies to improve the quality of life in the house. The domotics was born during the third industrial revolution in order to study, find tools and strategies for:
• Improve the quality of life
• Improve safety
• Save energy
• Simplify the design, installation, maintenance and use of technology
• Reduce operating costs
• Convert the old environment and old plants

Fabio Gaggi - DomoticsHome automation plays an important role in making intelligent equipment, facilities and systems. "Smart home" refers to a domestic environment (properly designed and technologically equipped) which provides the facilities that go beyond the "traditional", where equipment and systems are able to act as partially autonomous or planned by ' user and recently completely autonomous.
At a higher level, we talk about "building automation." The intelligent building with the help of new technology, allows management coordinated and integrated computerized technology of the installations (air conditioning, water distribution, gas and energy, safety equipment), IT networks and communication networks in order to improve the flexibility of management, comfort, safety, energy conservation of buildings and improve the quality of living and working in the buildings. A domotic system is completed, usually through one or more systems to communicate with the outside world (e.g. pre-recorded phone messages, text messages, automatic generation of web pages or e-mail) to allow control and display of the state also remotely. Communication systems of this type, called gateway or residential gateway, play the role of advanced router, allowing the connection of the entire home network to the outside world, and hence the networks in the public domain.

Fabio Gaggi - DomoticsThe technological solutions that can be adopted for the implementation of a domotic system are characterized by peculiarities of their use of household items:

• Simplicity: the domotic system directed to a wide audience and not professional, so should be simple to use in a natural mode.

• Continuity of operation: the system must be constructed may think we must offer a continuous service and that is virtually immune to failure.

• Reliability: the system always works, without requiring special attention.

Technologies for home automation can also get some benefits such as:
• Energy saving, a fully automated system must avoid the costs generated by waste energy due to omissions or other conditions, continuously monitoring consumption and managing the priority of ignition of appliances.
• Automation of daily actions: a home automation system should simplify some daily activities, especially repetitive ones, should not in any way complicated.

The house is not intelligent because you have installed intelligent things, but because of the the system of intelligent features which can monitor and manage an easy operation of the facilities.
The user interface (man-machine interface) must, according to all the above considerations, be consistent (not to create conflicts between the commands), be easy to use (think of the children or the elderly) and be nice (the difficulties of working with the system should not be a barrier to its use).

The possible areas of automation in a house are:

• Management
• Management of equipment
• Communication and Information
• Security
• Heating of water
• Management of household
• Communication and Information

Safety:
Unlike the home automation, an area undergoing rapid growth, the building automation already was established over several years, so that products of this sector, adapted on a small scale, can be applied in home automation.
The automation of the buildings is considered at a higher level than home automation, so the first can be seen as the centralization of the second, but in other respects these two sectors can also be seen in opposition.

Fabio Gaggi - DomoticsThe strength of building automation is that a building must provide a range of services (e.g. water distribution, gas, electricity, television/satellite, heating, etc..). Environments to content (for example flats or office) and so these plants benefit - in terms of cost - the fact that community, that the cost allocated to each user paltry compared to the benefit.
For this have recently been introduced in the communion service in the refrigeration (air conditioning), video, internet connection etc..
At the lower level domotics must re-distribute the services distributed by the condominium as well as any services under the various rooms of the apartment.
Recently in this area, the CHP derivatives were introduced by new laws that allow the self-generation of electricity.
